Hillary Clinton's last gasp campaign suffered a gaping, self-inflicted wound Friday when she recalled Robert Kennedy's 1968 assassination while defending her determination to keep running against Barack Obama.
Meeting with the editorial board of the Argus Leader newspaper in Sioux Falls, S.D., Clinton vigorously defended soldiering on through the last two primaries on June 3.
"My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right?" Clinton said. "We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California."
Political reaction was swift and unanimously negative. Even Hillary loyalists expressed shock, dismay and private outrage.
All those Hillary supporters who cannot seem to fathom the enormity of this crass comparison and would want to use various means of verbal contortions to explain Hillary's intent just think of this; 1) Here is a woman who by your various admissions is the smartest cookie in the jar 2) An attorney at law who understands how to present and make a case 3) An astute political operative with a self-proclaimed 35 years experience in political life who knows the difference between what is politically acceptable and what is not. 4) And who could have cited numerous other examples to have made a better and stronger case without recourse to the ASSASSINATED vernacular 5) Whose campaign at first sent out its most senior African American to express outrage that we are outraged! 6) Then came out herself to offer an apology that turned out not to be an apology Perhaps what Hill supporters and apologist do not and are incapable of understanding is that these remarks are not miss-sponed remarks nut ate strictly self-serving.
Of course she will try to spin her way out of this, but the comment was a Freudian slip.
Could Hillary be staying in the race and hoping for an Obama assassination?
Her explanation fot it is weak. She could have just said that the 1968 contest went into the summer without talking about assassination. That would still be historcially accurate if that was the point she wanted to make.

I think that Hillary finally has cooked her own goose. And knocked herself out of the race...if she wasn't already!..there is no way after what she said she will have a chance...

Hillary: Why I Continue To Run
This past Friday, during a meeting with a newspaper editorial board, I was asked about whether I was going to continue in the presidential race.
I made clear that I was - and that I thought the urgency to end the 2008 primary process was unprecedented. I pointed out, as I have before, that both my husband’s primary campaign, and Sen. Robert Kennedy’s, had continued into June.
Almost immediately, some took my comments entirely out of context and interpreted them to mean something completely different - and completely unthinkable.
I want to set the record straight: I was making the simple point that given our history, the length of this year’s primary contest is nothing unusual. Both the executive editor of the newspaper where I made the remarks, and Sen. Kennedy’s son, Bobby Kennedy Jr., put out statements confirming that this was the clear meaning of my remarks. Bobby stated, “I understand how highly charged the atmosphere is, but I think it is a mistake for people to take offense.”
I realize that any reference to that traumatic moment for our nation can be deeply painful - particularly for members of the Kennedy family, who have been in my heart and prayers over this past week. And I expressed regret right away for any pain I caused.
But I was deeply dismayed and disturbed that my comment would be construed in a way that flies in the face of everything I stand for - and everything I am fighting for in this election.
